Fall/Winter
- Insulate your water heater. Adding insulation to your water heater and any exposed pipes can save you up to 15% of the costs of heating water. An insulating blanket will pay for itself in one year or less!
- Lower the thermostat on your water heater.
Water heaters sometimes come with high temperature settings, but a setting of 120°F provides comfortable hot water for most uses.
- Drain sediment from your water tank. Drain a quart of water from your water tank every 3 months. This will remove sediment that reduces heat transfer and lowers the efficiency of your heater.
- Keep flue damper tightly closed. Because a chimney is designed for smoke to escape, so too does warm air. Make sure to close the flue damper when the fireplace is not in use.
Summer
- Ventilate your home. Ventilation plays a large role in providing moisture control and reducing summer cooling bills. Attic vents can be installed along the entire ceiling cavity to help ensure proper airflow, helping to make a home more comfortable and energy efficient.
- Reduce air conditioning costs. Plant trees and shrubs around your house, especially on the west side, to create shade.
All Seasons
- Seal leaks in heating and cooling system ducts. Also fix leaks in heating/cooling ducts and in water/steam heat pipes will create savings of 5-25% of total heating/cooling costs.
- Maintain natural heat in your home. During the heating season, keep shades on the south-facing windows open during the day to allow sunlight into your home, and keep them closed at night to prevent cool drafts. During the cooling season, keep these windows covered during the day to prevent solar heating.
